DER Fundamentals Workshop

“Distributed resources are an increasingly important part of the nation’s resource mix and will play a critical role in the future of the grid.”

– Cheryl LaFleur, Acting Chairman, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)

Whether you are new to the electricity industry or an expert in one technology looking to learn more about the others and how they all work together, this event will provide a great opportunity to kick off the Grid Evolution Summit and get the most out of your time in DC.

This DER Fundamentals Workshop will explore and explain the world of distributed energy resources (DER) and how they are managed on the power grid through the lens of FERC’s NOPR on Electric Storage Participation in Markets Operated by Regional Transmission Organizations and Independent System Operators, along with state regulatory activities such as New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision (NY REV), California’s Distribution Resources Plan (DRP), and other states specifically considering DER in the context of grid modernization. We will work through the issues in an approachable way, relevant to those working in both vertically integrated and restructured electricity markets.

Key Topics:

  • Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Technologies Overview
  • Wholesale and Retail Market Designs
  • Program Design Considerations
  • Technical Integration Considerations
  • Distribution and Resource Planning Considerations

What You’ll Learn:

  • How are DER defined, and what are the services they provide to both consumers and the electrical grid?
  • How are DER technologies like demand response, solar, storage, EV, and home automation technologies being deployed and integrated in vertically integrated and restructured markets?
  • What are the regulatory considerations of behind the meter DER transactions?
  • What is the role of the utility in deploying DER technologies? How can a utility work with third parties and aggregators?
  • How are utilities evolving their distribution and resource planning processes and implementing grid edge technologies to better integrate these distributed resources?
  • What strategies are being deployed to maximize the value of DER as a grid asset?
