SGIP 2016 Grid Modernization Summit Recap

 

After many months of planning, the SGIP 2016 Grid Modernization Summit took place in Washington, D.C. last week. Like the first iteration of the annual conference in 2015, this year attracted the most knowledgeable and senior-level industry experts to share their ideas and support the conference theme of “Accelerating Transformation.”

More than 250 energy attendees converged for three days of thought leader discussions, networking, seminars, working group meetings, and technology exhibits focusing on the critical need for interoperability and sharing knowledge to transform the power grid.

Pre-summit activities began on Monday, November 7th with all-day meetings of the Grid Management Working Group and the Korea Smart Grid and SGIP Joint Workshop.

Executive Forum November 8-9

After the SGIP Annual Member & Board of Directors Meeting on Monday night, the conference kicked off for most attendees on Tuesday morning. David Forfia, Director of IT Projects at ERCOT and Chairman of the SGIP Board of Directors, opened the day with a welcome and introduction to the conference. Keynote Dave Velazquez, President & CEO of local utility Pepco Holdings, also welcomed the attendees and shared his insight as a leading voice on interoperability in the region.

The rest of Tuesday, and the first half of Wednesday, was filled with the Executive Speaker Program, which tapped some of the brightest minds in grid modernization from across the country. Panels in the program included the following:

Vendor Expo

Also on Tuesday and Wednesday, SGIP hosted booths for the Vendor Expo, which highlighted interoperability and connected devices across the grid. During the expo, SGIP and technology partners ran a demonstration of OpenFMBTM, a framework for communication between devices on the grid edge as well as launched the OpenFMBTM Collaboration site at www.openfmb.io.

Vendors also gathered for the Vender Networking Reception on Wednesday night at the Capital Hilton’s upscale North Gate Grill.

SGIP Technical Program November 9-10

For the latter half of Wednesday and all day Thursday, SGIP Technical Working Groups and Committee meetings provided valuable member facetime and discussions (click here to see a list of SGIP committees). Many of the meetings addressed standards that the different SGIP committees are working on, and how members can continue to collaborate and overcome challenges.

After a week of new connections, shared ideas, and renewed inspiration, summit attendees helped accelerate transformation into the end of 2016.

OpenFMBTM on Display at the 2016 Grid Modernization Summit

Attendees of the SGIP 2016 Grid Modernization Summit in Washington, D.C., November 7 to 10, drew executives invested in the grid of tomorrow from across the country. One of the main attractions was a demonstration of SGIP OpenFMBTM  participants using open source OpenFMBTM code from our new collaboration site (www.openfmb.io) to showcase their firm’s products and services.  OpenFMBTM is a framework for distributed intelligent notes to interact with each other through loosely coupled, peer-to-peer messaging at the grid edge. SGIP partnered with 10 other organizations to host the demonstration.
