SGIP Gives Access to the OpenFMBTM Framework for Distributed Intelligence in the Grid

A new online collaboration site offers code, use cases, wikis,
and a community of thought leaders.

Wakefield, Mass., November 7, 2016 – SGIP announces the launch of the OpenFMB^TM (Open Field Message Bus) Collaboration Site, which will provide public access to code and informational resources to help enhance grid integration. The launch will take place at the SGIP 2016 Grid Modernization Summit in Washington, D.C.

OpenFMB^TM is a reference architecture and framework for distributed intelligence. It leverages existing standards to federate data between field devices and harmonize them with centralized systems. The framework was ratified as a standard by the North American Energy Standards Board (NAESB) in March of this year.

The collaboration site will provide, for the first time, public access to OpenFMB^TM example code for use in research and development. In addition to the code, the collaboration site will offer use cases, wikis, a blog, useful links, and a community of thought leaders.

“The OpenFMB^TM collaboration site is essentially a developer’s kit with downloadable, turnkey, executable files, along with a simplified version of reference implementation code we demonstrated at the DistribuTECH Conference & Exhibition earlier this year,” said Aaron Smallwood, Vice President of Technology at SGIP. “For those industry stakeholders who are working towards grid edge connectivity, this new site gives them the information they need and the opportunity to bring OpenFMB^TM into their labs and explore how it can be applied with their systems.”

Not only will the OpenFMB^TM collaboration site be launched at the 2016 Grid Modernization Summit, but some of SGIP’s member organization’s products and services will also be showcased using code from the online repository during the summit’s Vender Expo.
