IEC 61850 Information Model Concepts and Updates for Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Overview of the hierarchical architecture of DERs Descriptions of IEC 61850 information modeling concepts Application and mapping of the IEC 61850 information model Avoiding chaos in DER data exchanges With the growth in DER deployment, utilities have less direct control over distributed energy generation. Utilities need a hierarchical approach to coordinate between DER systems that can self-manage generation and storage activities, system operators, and retail energy providers. Given the number of interfaces in the DER hierarchical architecture, the amount and types of data being exchanged can be huge, requiring standard information models to make interoperability possible. IEC 61850 has developed information models for DER systems to interact between utilities and field equipment. This document reviews the hierarchical architecture of DERs, explains the IEC 61850 modeling concepts, applies the IEC 61850 information model to the DER architecture, and provides an example of how to map the IEC 61850 information model to the IEEE 2030.5 Smart Energy Profile 2.0 (or SEP2) protocol.
