Coordination between the grid and advanced microgrids

As distributed energy resources (DERs) and microgrids proliferate, it becomes more important to understand their interactions with and effects on grid operations. Advanced microgrids may play an important role in ensuring the integration of their DERs and loads into the broader grid system and in providing ancillary services to the grid operator. Fulfilling these roles, however, requires real-time, two-way information exchanges between the grid operator and the advanced microgrid’s energy management system.

This paper contains a range of use cases designed to assist in defining the requirements for information exchange between the grid and an advanced microgrid.
