The plant runs on both biofuels and conventional resources and its ability to black start along with fast ramping and flexible output play a key role in the resilience of the island grid. The project annually saves customers more than 4 million dollars and reduces oil use by 26,000 barrels. 12:00 13:00 Networking lunch 13:00 15:00 Kahauiki Village Microgrid Inspired by Hawaii’s plantation-style homes and close-knit communities this 144 home community supports approximately 600 homeless family members. Kahauiki Village is sustainably designed to handle energy needs with photovoltaic, storage and a gas system for backup. With the Lawa’i project, KIUC now boasts the largest solar + storage peaker plant which has helped it reach a renewable energy supply of 50% and will provide around 11% of the islands power. This project, coupled with Tesla’s solar + storage project, enables KIUC to meet 40% of it’s evening peak using solar! Experts will share stories of their success, challenges and their approach to a clean, resilient grid.
