The Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are engaging smart grid stakeholders in the development of standards-based DER interoperability profiles for the electric power sector.

SEPA’s Interoperability Profile Task Force is developing profiles to improve the effectiveness of DER integration in an interoperable and standardized manner, using multiple standards, communication protocols and data models that are best suited for common DER implementation scenarios.

Stakeholder input is essential to this effort’s success. Through virtual information gathering forums, stakeholders will learn more about the scope of the effort, opportunities to participate and provide stakeholder input regarding:

    • Services frequently expected and requested from grid connected DER
    • Common technical communication challenges associated with DER integration
    • DER integration standards and protocols that should be prioritized for profile development

The development effort and this stakeholder process are initially focused on grid-connected DER integration. The project timeline is targeting the delivery of DER Integration Profile requirements in 2021.
