Demonstration of Utility Smart Charge Management for Multiple Benefit Streams

  • The NPV of savings for load balancing under Scenario 3: Steady Growth was $215M across both utilities and $297/vehicle/year
  • TOU rates work best early on, but load balancing delivers greater benefits as EV adoption and enrollment increase
  • Smart charging shifts EV load to off-peak times, easing grid strain and improving overall system performance
  • Customers participating in both the SCM pilot and EV-TOU Rate reported the highest satisfaction
  • Providing customers with flexible choices improves engagement and satisfaction

Exelon’s Smart Charge Management (SCM) pilot demonstrated how managed EV charging benefits both the electric grid and customers. The SCM pilot deployed technologies, customer strategies, and mitigated grid impacts across Exelon’s service territory.

The SCM pilot team researched, developed, and conducted a wide-scale demonstration to determine optimal managed charging structures for grid value, assess the impact of electric vehicle (EV) charging on local distribution utility operations, and evaluate Exelon’s ability to control EV charging load based on grid conditions.
