Convening the Industry Around Wildfire Technology for U.S. Utilities

A SEPA Research Initiative

Wildfire is no longer a West Coast problem. Extreme wildfire activity has more than doubled worldwide over the last two decades, and the Great Plains, Southeast, Midwest, and Northeast are increasingly exposed to risk that utilities have not historically had to plan for.

While utility investment in wildfire mitigation continues to grow, a small percent of current wildfire mitigation spending is directed toward the enabling and monitoring technologies that help utilities decide where to harden, what to prioritize, and how to act faster when risk is highest.

SEPA convenes technology providers alongside utilities, regulators, and other industry advisors to develop independent practical resources to help utilities better understand and integrate wildfire technology for managing wildfire risk before, during and after an event. By convening technology providers spanning vegetation and wildfire intelligence, asset condition intelligence, wildfire detection and situational awareness, wildfire planning and operations, and capital planning and risk quantification — this initiative maps how these tools work together and where integrating them into existing utility infrastructure delivers the greatest value.

Who it convenes Technology providers, utilities, regulators, national laboratory researchers, consumer advocates, and other industry advisors
Who it serves Any utility navigating wildfire risk regardless of utility type, program size, or maturity
