Research Microgrid Testing and Control Standards Briefing: An Overview of IEEE 2030.7/8 and Industry Recommendations for Implementing Microgrid Standards Microgrids have the potential to provide customers with clean, low-cost, and most critically, resilient power. SEPA hosted a briefing for Microgrid Controller Standards IEEE 2030.7© and IEEE 2030.8© to provide an overview of the standards and explore the challenges and next steps for microgrid standards. The briefing focused on the adoption and testing associated with IEEE 2030.7© or IEEE 2030.8© by providing: An update on the newest version of these standards A review of potential gaps in the testing standard (IEEE 2030.8©), and A look at potential future work or development the discussion group hopes to see Takeaways Include: IEEE 2030.7© and IEEE 2030.8© are an important foundation for microgrid standardization. Rapid microgrid development requires further progress in standards. Creating an adequate control standard is not possible until inverters are standardized. Those that test standards should prioritize simplicity and universal application over more advanced products for system requirements and testing. Standards Implementers should interface with regulatory proceedings to build on the regulatory awareness needed for a holistic framework towards an interoperable grid. This briefing was jointly sponsored by SEPA’s Microgrids and Testing and Certification Working Groups and is a collaborative effort driven by Mac Keller, Larisa Dobriansky, and many more.
